So as the title says I'm having problems with my computer and cannot find the source of the problem. It started with me noticing my computer only being able to use 4 GB out of 8 so I use the old internet for solutions and turns out it just needed a resit. Or so I thought after doing this it showed as 7.5gb out of 8 and now seems to have random CPU spikes and crashes after about 10 minutes idleing. I have been searching for a couple of hours and cannot find a definite solution, some say ram some say windows others say hard drive so I'm looking for some advice.

Well with the RAM problem it's either a 32Bit Windows you're running which only allows 4GB to be installed. Or one of the sticks is faulty, both are quite common.
About your random CPU spikes, what temps are you getting in idle mode? Also are you overclocked?

If you are running 32 bit Windows, it caps RAM at 4 gigs. But the fact that you did a 'reset' and it somehow gave you access to all 8 gigs is a bit weird. This could mean faulty/incompatible RAM or even a faulty motherboard. It saying that it is only allowing 7.5 out of 8 is normal. The other .5 is reserved for system processes. If you are having spikes and crashes, look in task manager and see what is hogging up your CPU resources. It is obviously not 'idle' if it is hanging.

try the computer with the ram taken out, if its fine then it most likely is the ram, also please post if your 64 bit or 32 bit os.
if you have done overclocking ,try to put it back to what it was and try again
