I have no idea, I just bought it yesterday at walmart for $10. I have also tried the mouse that is connected to my windows vista and still nothing.

Make sure you have the drivers installed and up to date. Mice, especially cheap ones, generally don't require the installation of driver software. You should also try connecting the mouse with the PC booted in to safe mode to make sure there are no driver conflicts. You might also try different USB ports.

You can use the tab key to navigate among text fields and buttons without using the mouse.

My xp bios settings have 2 usb configuration lines. One was to enable or disable all usb ports and the second was to disable or autoconfirm any usb keyboard and mouse devices. When I wanted to use my dual usb/pc/2 mouse permanently as usb, I had to, while the computer OS was running, first remove it from the PC/2 port, , take off the adapter plug it into a usb port and then turn off the computer. This mouse would work temporarily while the os was running but when I would turn the computer back on with the mouse in the usb port, it would say there was a pointing device error and would fail to boot.

The solution was to enter the bios, on mine using F1
and change the Autoconfirm setting mentioned above to disable. It worked. If you dont have this second usb line then making sure the mouse line and the usb port lines in the bios are both enabled and saved before booting. This should work.
