My friend got a PSU with no extra cables, his current gpu is self powered, it is very old, but he got a GTS 550 Ti for free and asked me if he could buy these cables : [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
and plug it into the PSU and to the GPU and would it work. I have no idea seeing how i have the original cables so would this work

The only way we could tell you if it worked would be if you let us know if his power supply is modular or not, and how many watts the power supply is.

Well seeing as those cables look like extensions then no they wouldn't go from the PSU directly into the GPU.
He would need to either find the cables that came with his power supply and add them in, see if they are currently in the system and unused or find some power supply cables online that would fit that particular supply.
Alternatively a GTX550Ti would even have a lot of room to spare on a 450w supply and this would be a great chance to find a new quality unit for his build if his current isn't good quality.
