well you really cant tell unless you add a friend and use the gt you want and if one is not have any gt than you can have it

If you do have to type out the name of the gamertag xbox dot com will be a quicker way to type them all in.

ok so you type in the GT you want to check and you type it in to add a friend and if none show up its available

He means you can send the GT a friend request and then you can tell if it's taken or not

Gamertags become available after either 7 or 8 years of inactivity I believe.
