So this is the first computer I have ever built. I finally finished gEtting the components together but wanted to know if I should use windows 7 or 8.1. I'm going to be using this computer for gaming if that helps.

Windows 8.1 isnt that good and i prefer windows 7 but if you get classic shell its looks the same. But windows 8 gets better FPS in game so i prefer that.

I've been using 8.1 for awhile now and I like it a lot more than 7.

Windows 8.1 has support for DirectX 11.2 and will have continued better support for newer technology than Windows 7. Performance wise they're pretty much the same.
Gaming on Windows 8 is great, I'd definitely go with it. And people bitch and moan about Windows 8, but I personally love it. Most of the changes are great, and if you can get past a few tiles, that don't really change the experience for you much at all, it's great. Check out Launchy, it's a great piece of software that I've used since Windows 7 which is ten times better for launching than anything in Windows 7 or 8.

Would you notice the increase in FPS? I am debating what OS to get for my new build, if i get a 10FPS+ Increase on certain games with Windows 8.1 i may get it. From a  Source..

Ok, we'll since most of you said 8.1 I'll go with that. Second, is there anyway to make sure the computer works without having software installed?
