no program and look at the games your buying to see if controller compatible

The wired Xbox controller works for a lot of games, especially the newer modern one's where controller support is more prevalent. Some of the older games don't have controller support but you can still use your controller with them by using a keyboard and mouse emulator to map controls to your controller.

Two programs which do this are:

Pinnacle Game Profiler.
Xpadder.

Also the wireless Xbox controllers also work, but you need to purchase the wireless adapter, making in my opinion the wired controller the more viable choice.

It's what I use whenever I want to play with an Xbox controller.
Works perfectly.
Can't tell you about the two programs G_Man suggested as I have never used them.
