Girlfriend gave me her old iphone 4. only problem is the lock button doesn't work and the home button takes a good bit of force to work. Any ideas to fix this issue ?

There should be a little circle coming from one side of the screen called assistive touch.

It's a common problems and I still haven't heard of any work arounds yet. I think most people just take it in to the Apple store and get it replaced.

Use A Hot Blow Dryer To Loosen The glue around the glass front then take an exacto blade and pull it up ...
take out the home button and properly clean it with and soap / bleach then once FULLY dried place back it the spot it was in heat the glue on both the phone and the partially detached screen then push them firmly together allowing it to sit for 8 hours . i hope this helped p.s. this worked on my iPod 4

Same thing with my iphone, think it's a common problem since I know a few friends that have the same problem I just use assistive touch for the time being and it's good enough. Apple told me they wanted 110 to fix the lock button of an iphone 5

Try going into settings and choosing assistive touch. You can move the little circle anywhere on your phone (I chose between the time and battery since it doesn't interfere with anything)
