Hey guys so I have a bunch of friends that want me to use Linux or Ubuntu but I'm not exactly sure what they are or how to get them etc... Can you help?

Linux is a free open source Operating system, and Ubuntu is just a version of it.

It has many variations SteamOS is a Linux based OS. Same with Debian, Mint and Ubuntu. if you like the look of it, Google it and install it.

there isn't really a 'best' one, it all down to what you prefer. The best ones to start on are Ubuntu, Mint or Debian.

ElementaryOS is also a very good version.

I have Ubuntu, and I can honestly say I like it with a two exceptions.

1) My software center won't work anymore.
2) If the software center doesn't work, you have to manually download everything through terminal.

Wait so when I have it do I just put the file onto a USB and then restart my computer?

You need to make your USB a bootable device or install with Wubi. And I'd recommend using a separate HDD as if you choose the wrong option, it can wipe your HDD.

So put the file onto an External HDD and boot from that?
