Linux is a free open source Operating system, and Ubuntu is just a version of it.
It has many variations SteamOS is a Linux based OS. Same with Debian, Mint and Ubuntu. if you like the look of it, Google it and install it.

G3MSIncrested wrote Ok so which one is the best and what do they do like are they different in what they do or are they just different UI's? [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]there isn't really a 'best' one, it all down to what you prefer. The best ones to start on are Ubuntu, Mint or Debian.
ElementaryOS is also a very good version.

I have Ubuntu, and I can honestly say I like it with a two exceptions.
1) My software center won't work anymore.
2) If the software center doesn't work, you have to manually download everything through terminal.

You need to make your USB a bootable device or install with Wubi. And I'd recommend using a separate HDD as if you choose the wrong option, it can wipe your HDD.
