This always used to happen in Halo 3. It used to be like twice then the 5 ft and it was bullshit as well. Oh well not every game can be perfect I guess.

I've had stuff like this.
In this video here I have a shot that is so far away from someone they're not even in the scope but it kills them.
Yet at the same time there's a kill at the beginning directly on a guy that misses. So I guess they kind of cancel each other out.
But you can't forget about the way Tomahawks can completely change directions...

the hit detection is REALLY BAD in black ops, worse than MW2. i can't clutch cuz as soon as i take cover i'm already dead bcuz my 'imaginary body' is getting shot at.
dead on sniper shots miss a lot over xbl... but somehow on system link i can get ppl easily.
