The Illuminati conspiracy theory claims a super-secret society has penetrated governments, finance, science, business, and the entertainment industry with one goal in mind: world domination.
For Christians, this seemingly far-fetched idea may hold a grain of truth from the book of 1 John. John mentions the coming of the Antichrist, a charismatic leader who will take control of the world's governments and rule for 42 months.

Truth About the Illuminati Conspiracy

The secret Illuminati society was started in 1776 in Bavaria by Adam Weishaupt, a professor of canon law at the University of Ingolstadt. Weishaupt patterned his organization on the Freemasons, and some say Illuminati infiltrated that group.
It wasn't long before members began fighting each other for control. In 1785 Duke Karl Theodor of Bavaria banned secret societies, fearing some might be a threat to the government. Weishaupt fled to Germany, where he began expanding his philosophies of a one world government.

Illuminati conspiracy theorists suggest that the organization started the French revolution to further its goals of a society ruled by reason, but most historians say that claim is highly improbable.

As a free thinking organization, the Illuminati spread throughout Europe, picking up 2,000 members across Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, and Italy.

Weishaupt died in 1830. Because of the connection between the Illuminati and Freemasonry, many speculate that Illuminati played a part in the early history of the United States. Many of the founding fathers were Freemasons. Mysterious symbols on paper money and even monuments in Washington, DC have been attributed to Masonic influence.

Over the years, the Illuminati have become a popular topic for movies, novels, websites, and even video games. Theorists blame the Illuminati for everything from the Great Depression to world wars. In many people's minds, the Illuminati idea ties in with conspiracy theories about the New World Order, a current political idea about a one-world government, religion, and financial system.

Taking on the name "Brother Spartacus," Weishaupt forms a secret society called the Order of the Illuminati (also known as the Order of Perfectibilists).

Weishaupt becomes a Freemason and begins to advocate "Illumined Freemasonry." He describes it thusly:
I have contrived a system which possesses every advantage. It attracts Christians of every communion, gradually frees them from all religious prejudices, cultivates the social virtues, and animates them by a great, feasible, and speedy prospect of universal happiness in a state of liberty and moral equality, freed from the obstacles which subordination, and the inequalities of rank and wealth, continually throw in our way ...

This is the great object held out by this Association, and the means of attaining it is Illuminationenlightening the understanding by the sun of reason, which will dispel the clouds of superstition and prejudice. The proficients in this Order are therefore justly called the Illuminated.
While Freemasonry provided Weishaupt with the sort of private social networks that he needed to spread his doctrine of the Illuminati, it would also lead many to see a connection between Illuminated Freemasonry and Freemasonry as a wholeone that would place Freemasonry at the center of conspiracy theories for centuries to come.

The U.S. government adopts the Eye of Providence as part of the Great Seal, accompanied by the Latin text novus ordo seclorum (often translated as "New World Order"). Because of the historical connection between Freemasonry and the Eye of Providence, and the then-recent emergence of Illuminated Freemasonry, some conspiracy theorists have taken this to mean that the Illuminati had some kind of formative role in U.S. history. There is no meaningful evidence to support this theory.

Duke Karl Theodor of Bavaria bans secret societies, driving Weishaupt and the Illuminati further underground.
1786
Exiled to Germany, Adam Weishaupt writes the first of twelve volumes about Illuminism. He would go on to write 27 volumes of philosophy in all.

Augustin Barruel's Illustrating the History of Jacobism claims that secret societies played an instrumental role in the French Revolution, and points to the Illuminati as a corrupting influence.

John Robison's Proofs of a Conspiracy further articulates the anti-Illuminati conspiracy theory.1800
In a letter to the Rev. James Madison (not to be confused with the Founding Father of the same name), Thomas Jefferson dismisses the anti-Illuminati conspiracy theories and paints Weishaupt as a utopian idealist in the tradition of William Godwin:
Weishaupt seems to be an enthusiastic Philanthropist ... He thinks he may in time be rendered so perfect that he will be able to govern himself in every circumstance so as to injure none, to do all the good he can, to leave government no occasion to exercise their powers over him, and of course to render political government useless ... Weishaupt believes that to promote this perfection of the human character was the object of Jesus Christ. That his intention was simply to reinstate natural religion, and by diffusing the light of his morality, to teach us to govern ourselves. His precepts are the love of god and love of our neighbor. And by teaching innocence of conduct, he expected to place men in their natural state of liberty and equality. He says, no one ever laid a surer foundation for liberty than our grand master, Jesus of Nazareth.

He believes the Freemasons were originally possessed of the true principles and objects of Christianity, and have still preserved some of them by tradition, but much disfigured ... As Weishaupt lived under the tyranny of a despot and priests, he knew that caution was necessary even in spreading information, and the principles of pure morality. He proposed therefore to lead the Free masons to adopt this object and to make the objects of their institution the diffusion of science and virtue. He proposed to initiate new members into his body by gradations proportioned to his fears of the thunderbolts of tyranny. This has given an air of mystery to his views, was the foundation of his banishment, the subversion of the masonic order, and is the colour for the ravings against him of Robinson, Barruel & Morse, whose real fears are that the craft would be endangered by the spreading of information, reason, and natural morality among men ... I believe you will think with me that if Weishaupt had written here, where no secrecy is necessary in our endeavors to render men wise and virtuous, he would not have thought of any secret machinery for that purpose.
Later that year, Jefferson was elected President of the United States.

Weishaupt dies, having outlived most public traces of Illuminism as a movementbut the fear of Illuminism, and the suspicion that Weishaupt had in some invisible way succeeded in taking over the Western world, would live on for centuries to come.

23 And some of these technophiles have gone a step farther, creating actual machine intelligences. These sentient computers are now, themselves, a force among the ruling Illuminati.

24 The Illuminati don't like war; it's expensive and wasteful. War only happens when two groups of Illuminati are very evenly matched and neither is willing to negotiate. But then they whip a few nations into a patriotic fervor and go at it.

25 They send secret messages through the newspapers and airwaves in the classified ads, and even buried in news reports. They have other, even stranger forms of secret communications . . . all around you, all the time.

26 They keep everyone yes, everyone under constant surveillance. Every time you fill out another questionnaire, you're weaving another strand of the net that binds the world.

27 They are working to make the law as confusing as possible, so everything will be illegal or potentially illegal then they have a hold on everybody and everyone will fear the laws.

35 They are constantly experimenting with new types of mind control. They put drugs in drinking water, flash subliminal messages during movies and TV shows, and play instructions that you can't quite hear over supermarket loudspeakers. They experiment with microwaves and ultra-low-frequency devices, too.

36 And every wire in your house is a potential pathway for Illuminati messages, attacks or controlling rays. Did you ever stop to think just how many wires lead to your house? And do you have any idea where they really come from?

37 Naturally, they discourage investigation of the strange and unusual, because it might lead to them. But they encourage people to joke about the Illuminati.

38 They also publish supermarket tabloids, just to make sure that everybody thinks "Hitler's Brain Is Alive!" and "Bigfoot Seen In Hawaii" are just jokes.

39 And they encourage the craziest pseudo-science "researchers" they can find, because this tends to discredit legitimate investigators into the unusual.

40 A popular belief is that the Illuminati want power for its own sake. This is true of some of them. But other Illuminated groups exist to support an ideology, to achieve a particular goal, or simply to oppose some other group of Illuminati.

41 One of their chief preoccupations is life extension by any means possible. Nobody who has held ultimate power for fifty years is eager to let it go. Anything you can think of . . . yoga, cryonics, body-exchange, magic, cloning, goat (or other) glands, transfusions, computerized personality duplication . . . has been tried by the Illuminati at one time or another. And some of them work.

42 Furthermore, powerful Illuminati from past centuries lie waiting to be revived when science allows it. Mummies, pickled corpses, frozen bodies, conscious brains in jars . . . you would recognize the names if we could mention them.

44 They use disease as a weapon to discipline their own populations or destroy competing ones. Black Death in Europe, smallpox among the American Indians . . . The swine flu, a few years ago, was thwarted by opposing forces, or you probably wouldn't be reading this.

45 They have a variety of unhuman and inhuman servants. The dreaded Men in Black are perhaps their best-known agents. No one knows whether the MIBs are androids, golems, or something even worse. Perhaps they were once human . . .

The Intervention by the Masonic-Rosicrucian-Illuminati

In 1934, Secretary of Agriculture, soon-to-be Vice-President (1940-44) and 32nd degree freemason Henry Wallace submitted a proposal to the president to mint a coin depicting the seal's obverse and reverse. President Franklin D Roosevelt, also a 32nd degree freemason, liked the idea but opted to instead place it on the dollar bill. According to Henry Wallace, in a letter dated February 6, 1951, the Latin phrase Novus Ordo Seclorum impressed me as meaning the 'New Deal' of the Ages.

Roosevelt as he looked at the colored reproduction of the Seal was first struck with the representation of the 'All-Seeing Eye,' a Masonic representation of Great Architect the Universe. Next he was impressed with the idea that the foundation for the new order of the ages had been laid in 1776 (May 1st, 1776, founding of the Illuminati) but would be completed only under the eye of the Great Architect. Roosevelt like myself was a 32nd degree Mason. He suggested that the Seal be put on the dollar bill rather that a coin.

Besides being a high ranking freemason and having the distinction of introducing socialism into the American political system, Roosevelt was a member of a secret society called the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystics Shrine (Shriners), attaining the grade of a Knight of Pythias. The Order of Nobles and Mystics claimed to be an offshoot of the Illuminati.

Freemasons, Walter Flemming and William Florence founded an American branch in New York, 1872. Membership in the order was open only to Freemasons who had reached the 32nd degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite or those who've attained the last degree of the York Rite, the thirteenth degree (Knight Templar).

The Order of Nobles and Mystics have origins which date back to the seventh century apparently founded by a descendent of Mohammed. Author Michael Howard describes the Order's symbols.

The symbol of the Order is a crescent moon, made from the claws of a Bengal tiger, engraved with a pyramid, an urn and a pentagram. The crescent is suspended from a scimitar and in the Order is a representation of the Universal Mother worshipped in ancient times as Isis. The horns of the crescent point downwards because it represents the setting moon of the old faith at the rising of the Sun of the new religion of the brotherhood of humanity.
