This has just emphasized to me that i really need a job. Just turning 18 and with such competition amongst us 'young' people (is 18 young?).. i should really start applying.

But from what i hear you're right. I have friends who keep at it and in the end it pays off. If you need experience I would apply for 2 week work experience placements at different places, then they can't exactly turn you away for lack of experience.

Sanctorum wrote I completely agree with this. I feel like it's impossible to become employed if you're under 18. I am 16 years old and am leaving school but have no job to go to, so I will just be lying around my house all day while my friends are at school.

I have 2 years of work experience in a fast paced, cooking environment and applied for work in KFC, I was rejected in less than 5 minutes. It's a pi$$ take IMO.

I'm in the exact same position ...
But the fact is, in the UK, you have to be in further education till 18, so I can't just stay at home. And I 100% do NOT want to go to college :sarcasm: So I have to get an apprenticeship...
That's wrong. I'm still registered at a school but haven't been for 3 months. You are legally allowed to leave school once you are 16 in the UK. You don't have to continue onto higher education. I have quite a few friends who left school to go to college and I have one friend who left school before she even sat any exams, she turned 16 before her exams and she got caught smoking by a teacher, she panicked and said she was leaving so she left, legally. She continued to do absolutely nothing for 3 months until recently returning to school. Once you're 16 in the UK, you're basically an adult, you can do what you want. You don't need to stay in school, get a job or go to college/university.

Really? Because I've been told by near enough everyone that it is a legal requirement to be in education (Whether that is college or apprenticeship) until the age of 18? I[ve even seen it on the news

Im in the UK and you CAN go get an actual job when you finish school. You dont need to go to college or get an apprenticeship, a couple of my friends didnt want to go to college or get an apprenticeship and got a job working in a hotel and at a resturant as a waiter..

I highly doubt that was on the news, considering it is 100% false. Once you turn 16 in the UK, you are legally an adult(although you can't drive a car or purchase cigarette's/alcohol). This means you can do what you choose with your life, whether that is staying in school, getting a job or going to college/university.

Example- I am 16 years old and live in Scotland, I have not been to school in 3 months and don't yet have a job. I also have no interest in going to college/university. It is legal to leave school at the age of 16 and you can not be forced into further/higher education. I know for a fact that it is the same in N. Ireland and in Wales. I am assuming you are in England, which may be different but I would be surprised if it was.

It's pretty hard if you are young looking for part time these days.

If you show interest and innitative, it's not difficult at all. Along with performing in shool and not blowing it off, there should be no trouble.

It took me over 6 months to find my first job. If you're US, it's the economy. Nobody wants to hire if they really don't need too.
