Help Pl0x xbox 360 slim disc drive

Not too sure where to post this, but i guess ill post here.
my buddy gave me a Xbox 360 slim it works great the only problem is the disc drive.
so heres what had happened, his disc drive hit the pooper he decided to throw it out without extracting the dvd key he bought a new one put it in thinking it would just recognize the drive right away and play games welp it still plays dvds and cds but no games.
I understand i could rgh it to extract the dvdkey along with the cpukey, but i want to avoid that if possible (i don't really have 80$ to spend on the kit along with the dgx-whatevercarditis.) ~ worst case scenario ill just use for dl content.
i got it for a steal(40$) for a slim pretty decent i suppose. He also gave me a phat power supply along with the deal so (slim+phat psu = 40$), but ill stay away from that subject.
any suggestions on what to do with the slim.
