I've only been dabbling in graphics recently, especially 3D art.

My portfolio can be found here: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

As was said, I've just recently gotten back in to graphics (but starting on 3D renders).

You might want to try 2d instead because 3d is really easy and it doesn't get you noticed as much.

Just some advice, take it how you want...

Your advise is flawed, and a long way off.

3D art is some of the most respected digital art out there, 3D text is not well revived as it is usually badly done and placed into the incorrect setting.

2D and 3D are alike as on a digital format 3D technically doesn't exist. The perception of 3D is though in digital formats.

OT:

Portfolio needs a lot of work all round, there is a large amount to be worked on, look into artist that are well received (by that I do not mean people that are popular on TTG)

if your going to do 3D do something besides 3D text with textures because that is overdone but if you do something like design real life objects in 3D that is what looks good in my opinion.

3D text is a wide range for you to criticize is such a sweeping statement my friend, I have seen some fine examples of great art using 3D text (such that there may be other elements to it yes but the text is the main focus).

Some examples for one to ponder over:
