Ubuntu and Mint are generally considered the best for new users. Crunchbang is also very easy if you like Openbox without a desktop environment. That said, there are plenty of other distros that don't require as much work as the more "advanced" distros like Arch and Gentoo.

Depends what you want to accomplish . First off welcome to Linux non backdoored like the windows bull sht that the NSA is all up in =). Secondly are you familiar with linux commands and how it works. Can you navigate your way around with the terminal? like cd Desktop? Everything in linux in the terminal is CASE SENSETIVE just a heads up. I would go with Ubuntu like r00t said also some major linux disto could be BD'ed but I am not sure fully on that theory I know windows is =). Also lubuntu if you want speed. Its a wide topic man what are you interests and what do you want. I would suggest loading up a vm and trying them out =)

Im only going to be browsing the internet and watching streams/films, Im not doing any gaming on it but if i did game on this pc it would be minecraft. Im thinking of getting Ubuntu as i watched a video on it and it looks neat and clean!

I am currently running ubuntu also however. I have live usb of Kali,Netspeed,Mint and a few other os when I feel like using those instead. LIke i said earlier its all taste. I would suggest either A: run some through VM or B: download the ISO and turn it into a live usb =)

id go with mint, its similar to win 7 layout, and is pretty quick on old machines (1998)
