Okay so I have gta v from the market place and to play gta v you have to be connected to xbox live. So when I open up gta v the update pops up and it disconnects me from xbox live and I can't proceed to download because you have to be connected to xbox live to play on gta v it just dashboards me every time

Go to the game marketplace and search "The Independence Day Special" and download it from there.

Try to clear your cache and then restart your system. if that doesn't work then I don't know what else to tell you..
