CHICAGO Two hours before kickoff, as swirling snow whipped through Soldier Field, a pair of New England Patriots walked out on the turf to loosen up in sleeveless T-shirts.
No telling if the Chicago Bears even noticed, but the image spoke volumes: the Patriots are quite comfortable in brutal winter weather.

On the 28th anniversary of the famed Snowplow game in Foxborough, Mass., New England played like it was right at home in the near-blizzard conditions in Chicago, burying the Bears in a first-half offensive avalanche en route to a 36-7 victory.

BOX SCORE: Patriots 36, Bears 7

The win, the fifth in a row for the 11-2 Patriots, clinched a playoff berth for the AFC East leaders. Despite the loss, the 9-4 Bears maintained a one-game lead in the NFC North and can clinch the division with a victory against Minnesota next Monday and a Green Bay Packers loss at New England.

BEST & WORST: Tom Brady proves Pats are in command
Sunday's game was played in blowing snow that never let up. Temperatures were in the mid-to-low 20s throughout, with 30 mile-and-hour winds (gusting to about 50) pushing the wind-chill factor into single digits.

Quarterback Tom Brady acted as if he were in Miami, calmly picking apart the Bears defense for 369 yards passing and two touchdowns. He completed 27 of 40 passes for a quarterback rating of 113.4, before the grading curve for the weather.

The New England quarterback didn't deviate from his standard approach, spreading the ball to seven receivers with an unrelenting series of short-to-medium range passes. He threw for 195 yards and two TDs in the first half as New England took a 33-0 lead and tobogganed home from there.

"It was a fun day. We'll remember that one," said Brady. "We've been playing in an environment in Foxborough for a long time that has pretty inclement weather conditions. All of us who were out there today certainly played in snow and wind and bad weather."

Added Bears' linebacker Brian Urlacher, "It looked like the weather didn't affect them at all."

Under conditions expected to curtail the passing game, two Patriots receivers exceeded 100 receiving yards. Wes Welker, one of the sleeveless Pats in warm-ups, caught eight passes for 115 yards and Deion Branch made eight catches for 151 yards, including a 59-yard TD on the last play of the first half.

"I just knew I was going to go out sleeveless (in the game), so might as well get used to it, see what it was going to feel like catching the ball," Welker said of his pre-game attire. "Just trying to get my mindset ready for what was going to happen out there."

He said the wind gusts were severe at times, affecting the passing game more than the snow or poor footing.

"One time when Tom threw to me I thought I was going to have to jump for it and it ended up coming down to belly area. There was some gusts out there that made it kind of tough sometimes," Welker said, noting that he'd rank it among the five worst playing conditioned he'd ever experienced.

"It was like one of those games in your backyard when you're a little kid, in the snow and everyone's having a good time," said New England placekicker Shayne Graham, who kicked three field goals, but missed one extra point.

"When you look out on the field and you see little white tornadoes of snow in the middle of the field blowing around, it's kind of a cool phenomenon to be a part of and know you're playing in it," he added. "That's what makes this game fun. I don't think anybody on this team was worried about these conditions."

The snowy field reminded observers of the 1982 game against Miami when Patriots coach Ron Meyer ordered a snowplow driver to clear an area for placekicker John Smith, who used the advantage to kick a game-winning field goal.

Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler, coming off two strong games in the team's five-game winning streak, completed 12 of 26 passes for 152 yards, no TDs and two interceptions for a quarterback rating of 32.9 his lowest of the season and third lowest of his NFL career.

"We came up short in a lot of areas," Cutler said.

After Brady and the Patriots went three-and-out on their first possession, the quarterback engineered two 85-plus yard touchdown drives on the next two possessions for a 14-0 lead. He hit Rob Gronkowski with a 7-yard TD to cap a 12-play, 85-yard drive in the first quarter, then Danny Woodhead ran for a 3-yard TD to culminate an 11-play, 87-yard march 4:44 into the second quarter.

From there, two big plays put the game out of reach.

First, linebacker Gary Guyton, filling in for rookie Brandon Spikes in the first game of his four-game suspension, scooped up Johnny Knox's fumble and ran 35 yards for a TD and 21-0 lead. Replays at first made it look like Knox was down before cornerback Devin McCourty stripped the ball, but closer examination showed that he was sitting on McCourty's foot and leg, not the ground. Chicago coach Lovie Smith's replay challenge was denied.

Then with seven seconds left in the half and the Patriots appearing content to run out the clock, Brady hit Branch along the left sideline for a 59-yard score and the 33-0 lead. Branch had run past corner Charles Tillman and the Chicago safeties were nowhere in sight after the catch.

"We should have had someone back deep," Smith said.

The victory was the Patriots' second romp against a playoff contender in seven days, following Monday's 45-3 embarrassment of the New York Jets.

"Damned proud of our football team," coach Bill Belichick said.

The loss snapped Chicago's five-game winning streak, but it retained a one-game lead in the NFC North thanks to the Detroit Lions' upset of the second-place Packers.
