Current specs:
MSI R7970
Haircomb Vengeance
Corsair TX750
(rest isn't necessary because it'll be replaced)
This is housed in an aging stock Lian Li PC-7 Plus.
Now, I have a few choices.
I could either get a Asus VII Ranger paired with a meaty 4790k
I'll need a budget case to accommodate this, as the PC-7 won't allow for heatsink upgrades without the removal of the motherboard
(Or left in the PC-7, but that's undesirable as it would be on stock cooling)
Next choice is a Asus z97-k with a 4690k
Using the price difference I'd be able to get a far superior case
If the latter, I'll need a case that can house a h100/i as I found one for 40/60 pounds, respectively
My personal preference is the 4970k option. But that leaves me a budget of ~50 pounds for the case (I'm at a loss to find a decent one, I've been looking at the zalman z3/200r)
So, what do you guys think?
Knowledgeable replies only please.
Use overclockers.co.uk for all recommendations, thank you!

Can't do. The bargain h100/i is on OC'ers.
As is the reduced-price mobo/cpu combo.

Assuming you have around 450GBP to spend, why not opt for the i5k instead of the i7? It'll give you as good gaming performance but will save you almost a hundred pounds.
As for a case, Fractal Design masterrace.

I believe I can justify the hyperthreading

In that case, a Intel Xeon 1230V3 has the eight threads that you'd want and comes in at 185GBP. No overclocking though, if that bothers you.

I am also a gamer and I'd rather avoid server chips altogether
Oh, and I guess I wasn't exactly clear in the original post, but I have no real interest in a motherboard/cpu outside of the options listed. This is all about option 1/2 and which case accordingly

It's more of a workstation chip, rather than a server one. It actually works with any LGA1150 motherboard and only lacks the iGPU.
If you did want the i7k anyway theres not really any way to cut costs down unless you went for a cheaper motherboard.
