So i got a messge when i turned on my ps3 telling me that the system was corrupt and that i need to install the latest software (4.60) so i downloaded it and tried to update it via flash drive BUT it stops at 98% and wont go anywhere past that so i had no choice but to unplug it which i know is bad but it freezes everytime at 98% like what do you do? So i figured i would take out the hard drive to see if it would fix the problem that way. i dont care about whats on it. But ever since i took it out and put it back in i get no picture what so ever, i tried 3 hdmi cables nothing i tried 2 av cords nothing. Then i took out the hard drive again left it out turned he ps3 back on and thats when i get a picture! With the messge could not start due to the hard drive not being in it blah blah blah. So why am i only able to get a picture when the hard drive is out and not when its in? Like how am i supposed to update it when it wont even give me a picture when i put the hard drive in??!!

Try resetting the hdmi.
Power on with the hdd in.
Then press and hold the power button till it switches off.
Restart your Ps3

Had the same problem but mine stopped at 49% you have to reset your full ps3 (wipe it) sorry but thats the most efficient way
