A modem generally gives you an internet connection, from your ISP.
A router, transmits the signal, giving you wifi.
Generally modems have a router function built in nowadays, but a router can help strengthen the signal.
This is from my personal experience, probably easier to google it and laugh in my face.

A router directs all of the traffic from your devices into the modem. The modem then gives you a connection to your isp. Who then give you access to the internet.

Back in the days, the modem and router were separate however, to save space/money/cable length, the router manufactures build the modem into the routers.

Easiest way to look at it without getting technical is Modem connects to your ISP, the Router allows you to split that connection up so you can connect multiple devices.

Your ISP serves you with internet that is received to you through your modem. Connecting a router to the modem makes it so that the signal or service that you are receiving from your ISP can then be transmitted into a wireless signal known as WIFI.

So the modem gives the internet but the router is just for wifi ?

If your modem has an ethernet port then yes that is possible. It would also make your connection better too.
