I heard that i5's are for gaming and i7's are mostly for editing and things like that. Is this true or completely wrong ?

An i7 for gaming is pointless as most games won't make use of more than 4 cores or hyper threading which the i7's use.
For gaming machine an AMD CPU would be a better idea as their performance compared to intel is pretty much the same and they cost a lot less.

i5's and i7's are cut from the same silicon pretty much and the only difference is that i7's have a larger cache and HT which in effect doubles the threads each core has making it a 4C/8T processor. I wouldn't use an AMD processor as a gaming processor as from personal experience I find my Haswell dual core better than an AMD eight core for gaming.
