My iPhone 5s has been playing up recently, and now I think it's broke. It was fully charged, and then it turned off, and it says it needs to charge when I try and power it on, but when I plug it in, it comes up with the red battery icon, not symbolising it is charging. There isn't anything wrong with the charger, as it works in my friends iPhone 5C. Any solutions? I've tried DFU mode, and it says that it needs charging still. I've had my 5s since February also.

It's ever since iOS 8, and I know that Apple patched the iOS 7.1 firmware. I'm trying DFU mode again now, could anyone help me?

If it's plugged in and it looks like the left picture but it still is not charging up then it is the battery going bad.

If it looks like the right when plugged in then that means the charging port is bad.

I'd recommend taking it to Apple first to see if it's still under any kind of warranty and they may be able to replace the phone. If not take it to a repair shop to fix it.

If you want to fix it yourself the battery is easily replaceable(although hard to get out of the frame) but the charging port is a little bit more of an irritating repair. If you do attempt to fix it yourself make sure to watch some videos on it first and be careful of the home button flex cable, if you break it your TouchID wont ever work again.
