I was in orbit on destiny getting ready to go to mars when a message popped up saying that the disc could not be read or the content could not be verified. So I took the disk out and cleaned it with a soft cloth and started playing again. It made me reinstall the game before playing. Luckily all my characters were still there or I would have been pissed. Anybody else have this issue or know why it happened?

Sounds like your install just got corrupted by the Fallens evil henchmen Mr Corruptor.
