Close to my house there is a training house for guard dogs, this is a tragedy/comedy that happened to me there.
I was walking my 9 year old Boston terrier, and we encounter two giant German shepherds over a fence.
The two massive guard dogs start to bark at us, and the coward dog of mine gets terrified and starts to walk at a slower pace, until we heard this loud shattering sound.
I looked back and lo and behold they completely broke the fence down, and they started to run toward us.
I ran like crazy, dragging my dog on his leash, and I quickly picked up and threw my dog over a stone wall. I knew how deadly the two dogs were from the size and the training they get, so I shouted "NO! GO BACK!" waving my hand against them, but they had no interest in me but was trying to jump over the wall to get to my middle-size dog.
I picked up a stick and swung it like a kid but it didn't work, so I took my dog's poop (in a plastic bag) and threw it at them and they finally gave up. I climbed up the stone wall too and waited until they went away, which took about 15 minuets... And that is why I just came home exhausted.

Wow,
that could have been worse. It looks like you got off lucky!
I would definitely talk to the owner of those dogs as it could be someone next time who doesn't manage to fight them off.
