Is this a good start? I don't know what to do to it now, I like modern day simple stuff, but I can't think of anything to even put in the background.

First of, you used Photoshop. Not Illustrator.

Secondly, all you seem to have done here is make a clipping mask over an image using that specific font that you used. This is quite easy to do and you need to learn what program you are in and how to make more complex things rather than this.
