Today Rep. Governor of Michigan Rick Snyder approved House Bill 4118 and Senate Bill 275, establishing a program that requires adult welfare recipients to be drug tested in order to receive welfare benefits. The program will be tested for one year in three counties in Michigan.
The program was created to cut spending on welfare programs for individuals who abuse the income to support their drugs habits, although it is unknown how much it will actually save.
What do you think about the program? Do you think that welfare recipients should be required to take drug tests? Do you think this program will prove useful?

A positive drug test would lead to referrals to treatment programs. If an individual refuses to participate in the program or fails to submit to periodic substance abuse testing required under the program, their assistance will be terminated. Benefits can be restored after a person passes a substance abuse test.

Opponents of the legislation, including the Michigan League for Public Policy, have said similar programs in other states haven't saved taxpayers money. The nonpartisan Senate Fiscal Agency estimated a statewide program would cost roughly $700,000 to $3.4 million, while potentially saving $370,000 to $3.7 million in caseload reductions.

I am 100% for this program and have been saying they need to do this for a long time! Its a proven fact that people that are getting assistance from the government or people that rely on others for a living have a higher risk of having some sort of substance abuse. If I am going to be paying for someone to live, I want to be paying for someone to live a healthy life at least, not some drug addict.

This is actually a very good idea.
If only they implemented this in the 80's and 90's when the crack epidemic hit.

I think more rules need to be pushed as well. EX: You must show proof every month that you are actively searching for a job & maintaining a stable living environment for your children etc

Looks like no one in Michigan will get welfare since everyone here without a job smokes crack.

Where I live, there are SO many people who try and take advantage of this. Saddening, but true. People who actually need it don't get on it, but yet drug fiends get accepted right away.
