If he actually makes shirts then he should do under the strings obv.
This is my first actual attempt at a design, There was no option or even a hint on how to get them under the strings, Which doesnt really matter since i just wanted to see how they look on a shirt.

You need to work on your text layer style. Just my opinion since i do designs for shirts, it wouldn't come out the way you want it to look. Keep trying!
