Sorry if the questions is stupid, just want to be 100% sure before I commit and make the purchase..
..0r even if they are compatible are there any issues eg one GPU bottlenecking the other (read online something along those lines).

You cannot SLI a 780 ti with a 980. 780 ti is GK10x whereas the 980 is GK20x. Two different architectures are not allowed to play nice together.

So you would have to get another 780ti doesn't matter which brand. But I'd say get another EVGA one

Are you going for a 4k machine? That's literally the only reason to SLI cards like that.

The only way to have a properly function SLI config is for both cards to be identical. If they're not, it opens up a lot of doors which can cause various different issues.
So in your case I would just buy another EVGA 780TI.
