Hi, I was wondering is it possible to upgrade my motherboard without having to rebuy/reinstall windows 8.1 OEM? Also I do not want to illegally obtain windows for anyone who suggests this.

The OEM license is tied to the motherboard, if you swap the current mobo with one the exact same model then it will be fine but if not then im afraid the license will be wiped. However you could contact Microsoft and explain and im sure they can do something for you.

Yep contact microsoft. Microsoft will deactivate your current windows and give you a new key for you to reinstall it. Just go into a live chat with their support team.

You'll need to hardware generalize your installation using sysprep. Once you're ready to install the new board:
Press Win+R
Type "sysprep" and press enter
Run "sysprep.exe" in the folder that opens
Use these settings:
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Press OK and wait for shutdown
Install the new board
Boot and Windows will be as you left it once all it detects the new hardware
Press Win+R

Microsoft only supports retail keys as thats all they sell, if you have anything OEM, its straight to the Manufacturer support for you
