If you have a certain car you are interested in you can check to see if there is a forum for it and then check the classified section of the site.

I'd go on autotrader and just do max = £3000 and do insurance group either <10 or <20 depending on your age.
But a list of popular first cars are:
Ford Ka
Ford Fiesta (UK's best selling car)
Vauxhall Corsa
Peugot 206-208
Fiat Punto/Grande Punto
Seat Ibiza
Fiat 500

Craigslist isn't really used in the UK; we use eBay, Autotrader, Gumtree and just the paper.
But anyway on cars: 1.6/1.4 VW Golf, 1.6 Audi A3, 1.2/1.4 VW Polo, Focus 1.4
Literally all new shape cars (Fiesta, KA, Corsa ETC) look like girl cars. Don't get a Fiat 500 because they are a pile of crap, all the cars i listed are the only cars you can have in the UK without being a girl. Serious...

Unless your rich please don't go out and buy a brand new car I would buy a second hand car because if your a first time driver the more expensive the car the insurance is going to be alot

if you're into old cars, i got a 1991 Mini City-E for about £1200 and being 17, insurance is only £1400 a year (may vary depending on a few factors)
They are fun, everyone loves em, going up in value so a bit of an investment (if you don't wreck it) and not too slow. One advantage is that if you get one pre 1989 then it can go on classic insurance, which is even cheaper..
just an idea anyway.
