Seriously just put the update on a USB and install it. It'll take no longer than say 10-20 seconds and you'll be completely sorted.
I did it about 2 weeks ago.
Did the same with my jtags, as long as you flashed the 12611 first, its fine to install the official update from microsoft just adds avatars,video playback, and kinect, after that your gonna need to get the lastest dashlaunch for kinect games to work.
