His friends had tried to stop him and after a while, believed they had convinced him to stop, which it still ended up being lit, apparently due to him holding a lighter. A quote from OP's article and another one.

"His friends thought they dissuaded him from doing it, and the next thing they knew, he ignited the fireworks and he was killed instantly," McCausland said.

Sad story, but what good could have come out of this? Alcohol had to have been a major factor but that was probably the worst decision you could ever make.
