The 390 is better and cheaper.
JayzTwoCents Made a video covering the 390 vs the 970 and the 390 beat out the 970 in every game if i remember correctly and its cheaper.

Yeah it does seem like a great card! But would I need to change my PSU and myotherboard? And I can't find a 390 cheaper than a 970 in the UK what do you think I should do?

cheaper than 970
as for PSU it should be fine
The GTX in my build is cheaper than that I think it's £238 and the build will support SLI I would probably need to upgrade my PSU and I guess I would need to change the motherboard but if you can make a build for the same price that would support crossfire 390s then I would definitely go for that!

The cheapest 970 is cheaper than the cheapest 390, so no, the 390 is not cheaper. The 390 and 970 will trade blows. It's pretty much 6 or half a dozen. The 970 is more efficient, but the 390 will typically perform slightly better.

I think I will stick to the GTX 970 but all I need to know is would SLI allow me 4K gaming in the future when I buy a second one?

Yes. A single 970 will play 4k.
