This statement enrages me because whenever it is said it comes from someone who has abosolutley no knowledge of video games. I've been playing Video Games for just about 15 years now and only once have I had any sort of violent thought because of them, my buddy deleted my save file for Conker... Douche. All joking aside study after study show that there's no connection.
It also pisses me off when someone shoots up a public place and when a news anchor discribes them as a "Troubled video game player" ... Oh you mean this middle aged man happened to participate in one of the most popular entertainment activities. Maybe we should worry about the "Troubled" part instead of his ability to escape from the real world (Where he/she is probably having a hard time) by playing a couple of hours playing Fallout.
If any of these anti-video game people were to actually have any knowledge of these games they'd think otherwise. Until you've actually played them you'll have no idea what kind of effect they have on you.
Edit: not defending shooters

Video games are just easy to blame, thats why all these people blame everything on them.
Its unfortunate but people are ignorant and they just dont give a shit.

I've been playing Grand Theft Auto since I was very young.
I have never been suspended from school, never done drugs, but I have been in fights.
Just cause ive played a violent video game doesnt mean thats the cause.

This applies for any number of situations though, not only games. I agree obviously, but this isn't just an issue for gamers. People like to place blame elsewhere, anywhere they can and they look for any stupid thing they can to blame for someone doing something wrong. It's always happened, and unfortunately always will because people don't like to admit that they've done wrong, or someone they know has done wrong, or even someone that they can relate to has done wrong.
For example: Boy robs shop, boy gets caught, mother blames games because they have violence in them, when realistically, there's violence everywhere. It's unfortunate, but there's no getting away from it.
I doubt any one should be too concerned about this, other than us in the UK, since our PM is an absolute **** and will probably try to ban video games at some point, for literally no reason and he'll use some shit excuse like "hurr durr, violence" and then chant about how he wants to kill foxes.

I'm sure there are some concerned moms out there with the "let me speak to your manager" haircuts that believe this, but I doubt it's as big of a problem people think it is. These are the same type of people who scream "stricter gun laws!!" as if criminals follow the law (but that's for another thread). American news is all about fear mongering. If it's not dying from violence, it's dying from cancer. If it's not dying from cancer, it's dying because we're all too fat. It never ends, and the media needs a scapegoat to place blame on. Rather than chocking a troubled person shooting up a school to just that, a troubled person -- they turn it into a story that will strike fear into the hearts of parents everywhere: "Video games kill!" (because video games having the potential to turn little bobby into a psychopathic killer sells, a single "troubled individual" doesn't). It's sad really, there's not a single day I can flip to the news without hearing about someone dying or about how violent America is, or about how fat we all are -- It's always something.
Thanks Obama.

Some people do have mental disorders that can be triggered by extreme anger.
