Windows 10 is free for the whole 1st year. It should already be activated.

You probably installed it wrong. It asked me for a key when I installed it via removable installation device. I put it on a flash drive. But I backed out because I knew I didn't have a key. Id say your best bet is to reinstall windows 7 and use your key. Then download windows 10 from Microsofts website officially and choose the option Upgrade this Pc now.
This has worked for 5 computers that iv installed windows 10 on.

I'm saying, reinstall windows 7 and use the windows 7 key on windows 7 just so that its verified. if its a Pc you bought from the store the key should be on either side of the pcs case. once you download windows from the link I provided and select upgrade this pc now the key will transfer from windows 7 to 10. you do not need to get any keys besides those that you already have.

Apart from missing out on security updates, not being able to set a desktop background and keep it set or have a notification pop up about the key every hour.
Not really.

Yep. Difference is. If windows isn't verified you don't get updates. & to download windows 10 , you need to have two updates specifically. If you wanna try what I just told you and absolutely have no way to get a key... you could try this command line which will reset the 30 day trial you get before verifying windows so that you can download 10. and then you can use it every 30 days until you get a key. or just tired of doing it.
After installing windows 7 open CMD as administrator and type
slmgr /rearm
The space between slmgr and the slash is necessary. wait a few moments and you will get a notification telling you to reboot. once you do. your pc will be on trial.
