An 11-year-old boy has been charged with murder after he allegedly shot dead his eight-year-old neighbour and schoolmate over a puppy.
McKayla Dyer died on Sunday after she was shot in the chest outside her home in Tennessee.
The girl's mother, Latasha, told local TV station WATE-TV her daughter had refused the boy's request to play with her puppy before he shot her.
Jefferson County Sheriff Bud McCoig said the boy, whose name is not being released because of his age, used his father's shotgun.
She was pronounced dead at hospital.
Ms Dyer described her daughter as "a precious little girl".
"No matter how bad of a mood you were in she could always make you smile," she said.
The boy's family has not commented on the shooting."

Personal comment: This is probably true what I found, which was a comment from someone under this post on fb. "Typical American response will be: Why didn't the 8 year old have a gun to defend herself?".

Sad. I live in America and this wouldn't have happened if people didn't leave their guns laying around.

I hope it doesn't happen in Britain, or anywhere else, just not again!

You shouldn't own a gun if you don't have enough common sense to keep it some place safe, away from your child. Blame will once again be placed on people who own a weapon because one guy's irresponsibility.

To actually commit such a severe crime at such a young age is very appalling. Hopefully, the child learns from this and he is eligible for release when he gains the common sense not to shoot unarmed people.

Honestly, the parents of the 11 year old should be charged with the same charges for allowing guns anywhere near a child. Only in the damn south, where the average shoe size matches IQ levels.
