I'm not saying that you wouldn't be able to use one of those GPUs, but I can't fully max GTA V on my 970 (it is still very close) and I have a quad core 3450. There wouldn't be anything wrong with using an AMD chip, but it wouldn't max out those games completely like the card is advertised to, especially as GTA V likes to use as many cores and threads as it can get, hence why Craig and Sanctee can max out GTA V with 970s as they have 8 thread chips.

Also thought I should throw out there that if a 6300 or 8370 is an upgrade, then OP would most likely need a new CPU as a 6300 would bottleneck a 970/390 when playing newer, more intensive games like GTA V and Battlefront and getting one of these GPUs you would most likely be playing games at this level.

At the end of the day it depends on the games that are being played. Like Shittle said GTA V loves hyper-threading, most i5's will be pinned at 100% usage where as 4 core 8 thread chips like mine and others sits around 50%-60% usage with GTA V maxed with 2x AA. This is the same with the new Battlefront game, granted it was a beta but again my 3770 was sitting at 50%-60% usage maxed where as Xiggy's 4460 was pinned at 100% and caused his game to drop fps alot with a 290 maxed.

CPU bottlenecks aren't going to be that bad with cards like the GTX 970 or R9 390. Considering OP already has an AM3+ mobo, he can spend about $125 for an FX-8320E, instead of $250+ for an i5 and mobo.

Well, no. Just because 2 GPUs have the same amount of VRAM, does not mean they're the same. For example, the Fury X has 4GB HBM, whilst the R9 290 came in 4GB GDDR5, and 8GB GDDR5 models. The 4GB 290 and 4GB HBM Fury X are very different cards. The more/better VRAM, typically the better the card's memory bandwidth is going to be, which means it will handle more textures better, and play higher resolutions better, but that's not always the case. For example, an 8GB 390X is going to be out-performed by the 4GB Fury X because the Fury X is a better card, but the fact that it uses HBM means it has a much higher memory bandwidth.

Basically, GPUs differ in many ways. Just because 2 GPUs share something like architecture, VRAM, or whatever, does not mean they'll perform the same. The GTX 660 is a 3+ year old entry level GPU, the 380 is basically a brand new card for maxing games at 1080p. The 380 released recently, but is a rebadged 285 so it's technically a year old GPU, with some updates.
