First off what 3.55 firmware are you on?

Second, search for PS3ita and download their most recent CFW. Follow the instructions on their site. It will help you successfully get your console on a firmware that can be online. PS3ita won't necessarily be the most recent update but it will be able to spoof to it so you can play online. If you want you can also choose REBUG which might be easier for a newer modder. They both can handle a CEX or DEX console.

If you are all set-up and you try to sign in and it tells your console is banned, you need to purchase a console ID. If you don't get an error make sure you replace the CID anyways. You don't want your original console ID banned.

You also need to decide if you want your console CEX or DEX.
CEX is essentially the noob way of modding according to the community, but its a lot easier than DEX.
DEX gives you more control of your system. but its also not for new modders. Its complicated if you are clueless to what you are doing.

Make sure you don't download corrupt Firmwares, Plugins, and Homebrew. You can easily brick(break/black screen) that console by doing so. Thats why I try not to download these items from 3rd party sites or random threads.

for now stay away from console customization(boot logo, modded themes, etc). You can brick your CFW by doing these wrong. Eventually you will be familiar enough with your console to do so.
