Thurlow dwelled in the darkest of magics and communed with the Darkness itself. This affected his mind and corrupted him. He claimed he knew more about the Darkness than anyone else ever did. That being said, he was banished from the Tower and the City by the Vanguard because they believed no Guardian could directly connect to the Darkness and be unaffected and untainted. However, Thurlow wasn't just a Guardian. He harnessed the Darkness.
