I wouldn't recommend crossfiring 380's really, the performance difference between crossfire 380's and a single 970 isn't huge, and there can definitely be scaling and optimization issues in some games, some don't even support SLI/crossfire.

It is. 2 x 380s are a good bit better than a single 970. It's still better to get a single higher end card, but having the option isn't going to be a hindrance. OP might come across $200 and decide to just add a 2nd 380 to the rig for better performance, since he'd be unable to afford a 970/390 with $200. 2 x 380s could significantly out-perform a single 970 in games that scale well, and then in some games, you'll only get the performance of one card, but that's how XFire/SLI works, for every card.

I'm not saying OP wouldn't be better off just upgrading, because it's what I'd do, but having the option to add a 2nd 380 in XFire is pretty handy to have.
