it was up to OP, he chose the 390 so I assume he did some research and decided that was the best card for him.
Also, 970 isn't better as they perform about the same, in some scenarios the 970 is better and in some the 390 is..

true but the 970 uses alot less power at low and high load and it gives better fps on the more demanding games

What, yes it uses less power but it doesn't achieve better FPS in demanding games, the 390 is actually better in terms of performance especially at higher resolutions.

yes it does i have had a 390 and changed to the 970 and i was getting better fps wile maxing some games out, not all of them but the more demanding games. they are very similar

OP I would go for 2x4 GB ram as IMO it's more reliable incase one fails but it's up to you.

If you are adamant about not getting an SSD..

I would just get one now, if you can spend the extra get the 750 G2 for SLI support opposed to the 550 GS;

Thanks to all that have helped me, I mainly kept the same build but swapped out a few things. How did this turn into a big argument over which card is better? You can always look at benchamarks yourself, while they are pretty matched. For the most part, the r9 390 does a little better, but in some games the gtx 970 takes lead.

Thanks!
