My sister has forgotten her password to her laptop. It is a Toshiba running on Windows Vista. Yeah its old. I've tried a couple of programs that claim to retrieve the password or let you change it when booting from a flash drive but obviously no luck. Can anyone help?

Try starting in safe mode.

Otherwise. Hard restart it.

Is there anything she needs to keep on there, if not then reinstall the operating system from a disc or USB drive.

She has some documents that she needs. Otherwise I would have hard reset it.

There's many ways to save her files. If you decide to take the hard restart route, pull the drive out, plug it into another computer and back them up elsewhere.

Just for shits and giggles, give this a shot:

To get the files you could boot the PC using a Linux live bootable USB and access all files and folders from there without having to install the OS. Once you have everything backed up to an external HDD or USB just do a full restore using a bootable USB.

Dont do any of these guys are asking you if you want your old files. All you gotta do is use the windows 7 exploit where you can make speech prompt into a command by editing the files through notepad recovery mode. You can then change the password for any user
