HTTK wrote This is a great tutorial!

I hope it is stickied as it would be a shame to see it sink down.

Yeah thats what I tried to aim towards. I wanted to explain in as much detail as I possibly could so that the average person could understand. Not to mention thanks!

Good tutorial on DBAN, which is one of the best softwares available however I have a problem with the beginning of the introduction.

Wiping is used for various things besides destroying data on your p.c. It can be used if you are selling your old p.c, removing viruses, malware that maybe slowing down your p.c, or maybe even a fresh OS install, just so your computer doesn't have anything to worry about after a new OS has be installed. Now we will talk about how to get started.

Yes wiping your drives when you dispose of, or sell your computer is good practice. However where you say that it also destroys malware is incorrect or at least would not show any benefit.

If you had malware on a Windows installation and you then decided to reinstall Windows from a setup disc, you'd delete the original Windows which would then mark all that data as deleted on the drive (as your guide refers to) which would also mean the malware would be marked as deleted and the new OS would not even be able to touch it therefore it being rendered useless.

Just a small thing but it worth pointing out as malware removal can be as simple as using the correct tools, or reinstalling the OS. No drive wiping should be necessary.
