No point getting a 6600K on a unlocked motherboard and there's no point in getting a locked 6600 and it's not worth the premium for such a small increase in performance. A 6500 would be best.

You never mentioned overclocking and you chose a locked board so presume that's out of the question.

Stick with your 212 Evo as it's better than the stock cooler that comes with the 6500 and will do fine on a 6500.

I don't know much about Intel CPU's but i thought that the CPU will need to have the K at the end of it or can you help explain how he had overclocked that i5 6500. I'd like to overclock that to get the massive jump in performance (I know OCing will increase heat and i wont get the exact FPS increase as shown in video)

Overclocking your CPU isn't going to give you a "massive" performance boost in most cases.

Locked Intel CPU's could be overclocked with Z170 motherboards, but you had to download an unofficial BIOS to do so, which meant sacrificing a bunch of features, like the iGPU. It was patched by Intel though. You can still technically do it, if you have the BIOS needed, but most motherboards will have been updated by now, and I'm not sure if you'll be able to resort to the older BIOS needed, if your motherboard has already been updated. Regardless, it's even sketchier now to do than it was before, and I'd probably just avoid it at this point. If you really want to OC, buy an unlocked CPU, but you'll need a Z170 motherboard as well. Also, keep in mind that that 212 EVO isn't going to let you get the most out of a 6600k.

These are my specs inside the PC. I currently have the Aerocool 500 Case and on PC part picker, it says that the Motherboard from both lists you suggested will fit in the case. I have a pretty poor PSU right now but i will upgrade that down the line. [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Which one of these build are better? I know the i5 6600K is more new but down the line i hope to be able to run Directx12 and i've seen online that having hyper threading will improve the performance of games.

Just need someone to help explain the pro's and con's of getting the i7 over the i5.

i7 probably. Only reason to go with the i5, would be to have the newer socket really. Going with the i5 could make future upgrades a little easier, but not significantly easier. As for DX12, the i5 should also perform better with DX12, it's supposed to distribute work across all cores.

Also depends what you're going to be using your system for. I'd keep my 4790k over a 6600k, because I often hit 100% load with my i7 when I'm rendering/compressing files, so it's handy for me. However, if I was only using my system for gaming, I'd probably go for the 6600k.

Well, i do kinda want to get into YouTube so that'll mean video recording, rendering and potentially photoshop for cover art for the vids. I did make a few videos here and there but the current CPU i have was compete wank for it, making my frames drop by over 30 in most games, the GPU i have is decent i guess but i think i experience massive bottleneck.

Not sure if you know much about the AMD 860K but would you say that an i7 4790K will be a big boost in performance?

A 4790k would be a huge increase in performance over an 860k.
