Just joined a gym. Decided it would probably be best to start working out. I do plenty of walking at my job. 3-4 hours straight, while constantly getting up and down from my chair (I'm a security guard. I patrol frequently.]

So, despite doing that I still seem to be out of shape. So here I am. I'll be going every Tuesday and Wednesday morning and Thursday, Saturday and Sunday night(These are when I get off work.)

Just wondering what are some good things to do for weight loss then to pack on some muscle.

I was thinking:

30 minutes > Cardio
1x5 set of heavy free weight
3x5 set of medium weight
15-30 minutes > Cardio

Cross trainer for weigh loss and to build muscle use most weight machines in the gym until you feel confident enough to use free weights. Try to lift as heavy as you can handle with low reps. That's what I do anyway.

Aren't machines more for looks while actual free weights are better for the core? I haven't done gym since 7th grade Dx

Well, in your first couple of months at the gym, your body will put on a lot of muscle. You'll never see this amount of muscle gained at anytime again in your life unless you use anabolic steroids.

I'd reccomend doing all your cardio at the end of your workout so that you can lift as much weight as possible when you're lifting.

Trying to lose weight is as soon as you start the gym is just a waste.

First of all, you don't go to the gym to lose weight then build muscle. That just seems wasteful. I think what you mean is to turn fat into muscle, which is what should be your main goal. Also you'll want to separate your workouts according to muscle groups. So one day you do Arms, Chest and Back another, and Legs and Abs the last day. And you basically stick to that cycle or something else.

First off, do cardio LAST! This way you can use most of your energy on the weights(you will need it.
Second, do 4-5(min.) exercises per muscle group and 2 different muscle groups each workout
Third, rest 30-45 seconds between each set to keep your heart rate, which will allow you body to burn fat to keep your energy level up.
Last, dont over think things. Its easier than the internet makes it seem. Go simple, and do what you body was meant to do. Dont try to over do it and do something crazy. Its all about the basics.

Machines are meant to work on a specific muscle group. Once you get into free weights then you will be working multiple muscle groups, this is called compound exercises.
