So the Alabama flag has been removed from the capitol because of its "Confederate Imagery". This is absolute horse shit. I'm from Alabama and this is just ridiculous. I realize that they have a similar design, but any human being can still understand that it is just a state flag. Instead they are replacing it with the image of our states quarter. It just pisses me off, and the people who complained about this are pricks. Oh and dont worry the Mississippi state flag (which has the confederate flag in it) and the Florida flag are next I can about guarantee it.

I live in FL and if they changed my flag I would not give two shits, its a piece of cloth. I dont understand either side of the argument, its a piece of cloth with no significant meaning anymore. Why does everyone care? Do people actually connect with their flag so much that they get upset when they want a change and do people actually take offense from as I said twice already a sheet of cloth?
Stupid, there are bigger issues in this world and we are focusing on a **** flag.. my god.

Just a peace of cloth ???..
So if somebody burns your stars and stripes it's ok because it's just a peace of cloth.
These flags should offend nobody ,The flag is a symbol of identity for the people who have worked and bled and died for both their homelands and it's people.
You can not change history but you can learn from it ,But then you can only learn from it if you accept and embrace your history.
This is quikly becoming pretty stupid.
What next ?? ..,The jews become offended with gas ovens and demand you get rid of them..Bah.

As Qwel said, it's just a piece of cloth. No need to get mad.
Have a look at the poem "Flag" by John Agard and it shows how pointless flags are.

When I see someone burning the American flag, I don't like it but I feel it is free speech. In the that sense, yea, it is ok. Overall, I see it as people burning their own property. "You can only learn from it if you accept and embrace your history." Nah. Accept it, sure. Embrace it, not at all. I hope the Germans don't embrace the history of Nazis. Flying icons of the Confederacy along with having monuments glorifying the leaders of the Confederacy is not needed. No one needs those to learn from history. Old books, museums, historical sites, and history classes are for that (as long as places like Texas stop trying to rewrite textbooks that changes that.) Flags and monuments make it seem like people are still celebrating what was going on. I know some actually do and that is their right, but should the state be sending that message? I don't think so.

I realize its a piece of cloth, but its what it represents. I dont want people messing my states flag or burning or whatever people want to do to disgrace it.

I can't stand it. They tried to tell us that we couldn't have the Confederate flag at our school so most of us rednecks rebeled and had it on all of our trucks. Go ahead, suspend half your damn school.
The Confederate flag does not make me a racist, much like a pirate flag does not make me a pirate. The Confederate flag doesn't mean anything bad. Sure things bad happened while that flag was flying, just like how while the stars and stripes where flying, we bombed two cities killing a lot of innocent people (Nagasaki and Heroshima). Even if you don't give a crap about the flag, fight for it. You may see you're fighting for a flag, but your actually fighting for freedom of speech (in an imagery form).

It's OK because (1) it's a piece of cloth, (2), it's your property, and (3), it's your FREEDOM OF SPEECH.
People have different points of view for what a flag means. It might show freedom to one person, or jail to another.
Exactly.
A little too far lol, but fair enough.

I'm genuinely curious about the people who are proud of their confederate roots and use the phrase "Heritage not hate".
The confederates lost. They're losers. It's like proudly waving a white surrender flag.

It's like having a swastika on the side of the reichstag.
"But the confederates didn't ONLY fight for slavery"
And the Nazi's didn't ONLY fight for genocide.
"But it's our heritage"
Your ancestors didn't care about the rights and freedoms of African Americans.
Why do you expect people to respect them and have a symbol of their culture fly on the side of government property?
You wouldn't accept that argument from neo-Nazi's, so why do you expect people to accept it for you?
"But you can't seriously compare the confederate states to Nazi's and us to Neo-Nazi's"
Because slavery is so much more morally acceptable than genocide. No, they are both morally abhorrent.
As for you modern day Americans who are so proud of that flag, it is exactly the same as a Neo-Nazi claiming that the Swastika is part of their heritage and history and that it should be flown on the side of the Reichstag.
You might not agree with slavery, but do you really think that matters to a black person who walks past the capitol building and sees the symbol that hung over their slave ancestors heads?
If we're talking about one group of people loving the crap out of a flag and another group of people being emotionally damaged by that flag being flown, I'm going to side with the latter every single time in having it taken down.
Especially when it's on Government property, and especially when there is clearly a right and wrong side to the issue.
