If you need a carrier unlock do not update yet!



What you need:

Redsn0w
OSX:
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Windows:
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Remember if you are on Vista or Windows 7 you may need to open redsn0w by right clicking on the icon and selecting "Run as Administrator"

iOS 4.2.1 for your iDevice:

Download from iTunes or View at Bottom


Step One:Back up your iDevice, and restore it to 4.2.1. You never know what might happen.

Step Two:Open Redsn0w and click browse. Select the 4.2.1 firmware that you just restored to and let it identify the firmware.

Step Three:Click on "Install Cydia" and whatever else you want.

Step Four:Now turn your device off and plug it in. Be prepared because you are going to have to go into DFU mode.


Hold the power (top) button for three seconds.
Now don't let go of the power button but hold the Home (bottom) button for ten seconds.
Release the power button (top) but keep holding the Home button (bottom)


If you did this correctly you should be in DFU mode and you will see Redsn0w start working. If not, repeat step four.
If your device has the new bootROM (iPT 2G MC and later, iP3GS after week 48 and later) than this is a tethered jailbreak.
If not, you are done! When your device reboots you will be jailbroken.

Step Five:Now close Redsn0w and re-open it. Select the same firmware as before.

Step Six:Select "Just Boot Tethered Now". Your iDevice should reboot and be jailbroken.

NOTE: Whenever you turn off your iPod you must "Boot Tethered" on your computer or you won't be jailbroken.
