I can't exactly figure out what history he is talking about either. Sure there are things everyone may be ashamed about, such as slavery. But slavery happened just about everywhere before the United States, slavery took place before 1400 in Europe and various other countries but United States didn't pick up on it until 1619 and ended in 1865. While other countries ended just earlier into the century, some countries still have slavery. Of course, slavery is most recognized in the States and was probably the harshest.

So I am not sure why you asked if he was joking, I thought it to be a valid question. I would also like to know what he is ashamed of. As there could be many things, or hardly anything and he was just trying to jokingly saying that about the United States history. Or he doesn't know much about the US history so what he did say, was that.

However, what I am ashamed of? Mine would probably have to be the atomic bombs. I am often torn over this because I can't decide which side I am on. Dropping the bombs did do what they were intended for and probably even more. But there were a lot of civilians of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that were killed. There were a lot of casualties in result of the bombings but if we didn't drop the bombs, how long would the war have went on? Would the casualties be greater than dropping the bomb?

Of course there are many other things that I am not exactly for, but that would be the one thing that stands out to me most.
