Does anyone know a way to figure out Super Smash Bros Wii U tournaments ? I would like to go to one near my area (Maryland).

No idea if you've got everything figured out but I thought i'd help since I've been going to melee tourneys since 2012.

The #1 easiest way you can probably find tourneys is looking up "(your area) Smash" groups on facebook.
So in your case it would be Maryland Smash.
