Hi guys, I'm looking to upgrade to a new desktop as my current one is finally starting to slow down when it comes to new games.

My brother has about 1000 USD to spend and I have 1300 USD so it would be awesome if I could get 2 different builds around those prices (+- $100)

All I need is the computer itself - I have a monitor, speakers mouse etc etc.

The computers will almost solely be used for gaming and watching streams etc.

If you have any recommendations where a small increase in price would result in a notable increase in performance, or conversely if a decrease in price would result in very similar performance feel free to suggest that too!

Any help is really appreciated.

Cheers

If you're not going to overclock the CPU, get an i5-6500 instead. If you want to spend more, you can upgrade the i5 to an i7(6700 if not overclocking, 6700k if you are going to overclock), or swap the GTX 1060 for a GTX 1070. Add an HDD, something like a 2TB Seagate Barracuda if you need it for mass storage. GTX 1060 release on June 19th, $300 should be enough for a nice aftermarket 1060. GTX 1060 doesn't have SLI support, but the 1070 does, so if you went with a 1070, you'd be able to add a 2nd at any point if you need/want. GTX 1060 is more than enough for 1080p though, I wouldn't bother with a GTX 1070 unless you're already running 1440p/4k, or thinking of an upgrade soon.

Is overclocking advisable or is there an issue with that?

With a $1k+ budget there is no reason not to overclock IMO. It's easy enough to overclock and it can help significantly in some situations.

Overclocking potentially means less life from your components since you're giving them more power and voltage and increasing temperatures, but as long as you benchmark and make sure you have a stable overclock, you'll be fine. There's also no definitive proof that overclocking is detrimental, and even if it is, it's not severely detrimental. That being said, it's understandable if you're not comfortable with overclocking, and if that's the case, you should save some money and just buy a locked CPU with a cheap cooler like a Cryorig M9i/H7, Raijintek Aidos, or Be Quiet! Pure Rock.

Okay I'll overclock it then - Pretty sure I've done that with my current computer and it's been fine the last 5 years. So for a slightly more expensive build you reckon i7 6700k and a 1070 would be the way to go?
Also will I need to swap the motherboard or anything or is it all compatible with those parts too
Cheers

6700K will be an extra $100 and GTX 1070 will be an extra $200 so you could go for both of those instead of you want, or just one. I'd suggest the 6700k instead of the GTX 1070 if you just want one of them. Both are compatible with everything I suggested anyway.

Awesome thank you - That's likely I build I will be going with at this point.

Do you have any recommendations of where I should get the parts from? The only issue is they need to be shipping to NZ so it would be ideal to get them all from one place.

Cheers

You're better off buying from within NZ. What's your budget in NZD?
