I'm 17 and I live in NYC I was wondering what car you guys think I should get as my first car. I was thinking BMW 325xi 2004-2006 but everyone keeps telling me BMWs cost a lot to maintain. Is this true?

Yea kind of true, if I were you, I would just get a cheap simple car. How much are you even going to be driving it living in New York city and all.

You do know that BMW stands for "Big Money Waster" right?
Anyway, some people say X brand is expensive to repair / maintain and a lot of those people are repeating what Uncle Phil said. Call a local repair shop and ask them how much it will be to repair something simple that will need to be replaced sooner or later, say an upper ball joint. Compare a BMW or Audi to a Ford, Chevy, Honda, any other standard brand that's not "luxury". Next ask for a simple maintenance thing like brakes or an oil change.
Also a BMW, Audi, etc. will be more expensive to insure.

I'm gonna get a polo in gun metal grey for my second car, first car in not gonna be to fussy about, reason for is new drivers are likely to crash in first 6 months off driving so I'm gonna get a old Utah car that I wouldn't be bothered if j crash scratch etc I'm gonna keep that car until I feel comfatble for driving and less scared so when I go get my polo I won't crash or panic when it comes to it.

Where in nyc you located? and I had a 335i but it got too expensive to maintain. Stay away from them for now. Look at an is300 or a g35 if you want some kind of get up at a low price. other than that look for some different hondas and what not. Can't have anything too pretty in this city.

If I were you, I'd just wait to get a car since you live in NYC, my cousin lives there and he just sold his truck because he never drove it.

I would look for something like a Honda or Subaru. Cheap yet reliable.

Yes, BMW will be harder to maintain. Reasons being parts are a little more expensive. Also, usually when the engine racks up 90-100k miles that's when the real issues can become a reality. Especially buying second hand when you can't be 100% certain how the previous owner drove it.#
I'm not saying that as soon as you buy a German car that it will break, because that's not true. If they're looked after they can go forever. Just as your first car, I would advise against it and maybe look at another manufacturer.
I can't recommend a car if I'm being honest, purely because you live in America, completely different ball park when it comes to driving, insurance, cost and a lot of the cars we don't have over here.
Try Ford. Zetec engines are really good if you have them over in the states.
